“RODE THE WRONG HORSE,” SAYS ADJUTANT

Inquest Into Military Camp Fatality to "Northern Advocate”! ROTORUA, This Day. At the inquest into the death of Shirley Roland Hargreaves, aged 25, of Mt. Hobson Road, Remuera, who was killed at the Arawa Park Military Camp after being thrown from a horse during training, evidence was given that deceased had harnessed up a horse which had not previously been employed in a limber waggon. The evidence went to show that deceased was thrown from his horse, and fell with one leg over the pole of the waggon. The two horses attached to the waggon bolted and deceased was carried on the pole for about 20 yards. He was not seen to fall off, but was later seen -on the ground bleeding from the head. The camp adjutant, Cyril Ettrick Weir, said he later found that the horse which deceased had ridden had not been the one which witness had earlier instructed him- to ride. Witness’ opinion was that the us 2 of the wrong horse largely contributed to the fatality. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased died of a fractured skull caused by falling from a restive horse and being kicked or falling under the wheel of a moving waggon.
