The Hon. Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and O. Line, in a broadcast statement, said the New Zealand Bill was a conspicuous example of the action required to save British ship•n<J The only alternative was the wiping out of British shipping, with the result that both Dominions would be dependent upon foreign shipping for their link. This would be a position of humiliation in times of peace and disastrous in time of war. The “Daily Mail,” in a leading article entitled “Steam up in the Pacific,” welcomes the'New Zealand and Australian Bills.
