KING’S CUP AIR RACE

(Received 11.30 a.m.)

LONDON, July 10,

The Australian airman, Captain E. W. Perceval, piloting the Duke of Kent’s new Gull, was first to complete the first lap of the eliminating contest in the King’s Cup race. Mrs J. A. Mollison was among the last to reach Hatfield, having lost valuable time through mistaking the finishing line in the Bristol section. There were several minor crashes and mishaps, causing withdrawals. Captain Perceval was still leading at Norwich in the second lap and was first to complete the circuit over a course of 1224 miles, occupying 7hrs 7mins. V*

A British Official Wireless message says the Duke of Kent’s plane made an average speed of 171 m.p.h., including two stops of 30 minutes. Later D. Humble s Males Hawk, which was the second to finish, arrived and he was closely followed by R. J; Waight. in Lord Wakefield’s T.H.2, who had an average of 162 m.p.h.

Immediately afterwards, Mr Ross, in Lady Wakefield s Miles Hawk, passed over the line. The final heat will be followed tomorrow.
