KING EDWARD MAY VISIT INDIA.—The “Scotsman” says it is understood that King Edward may visit India in the autumn of 1937, in response to the desire of all parties and creeds that the new KingEmperor should hold a Durbar, as did the late King George in 1911.
HUEY LONG’S WIDOW.— The Governor of Louisiana has appointed Mrs Huey Long to succeed her late husband in the Senate. She will hold office until the elections in April. CONFLICT IN FAR EAST.—Japanese troops came into conflict with mutinous Manchukuo soldiers and had 12 killed and 12 wounded. The Manchukuo losses were heavy.
COLLISION IN CHANNEL.— The sequel to a collision in 'the Channel between the Italian steamer Fedora and the Russian steamer Pravda has been that the Admiralty has ordered the “arrest” of the Fedora.
ABYSSINIAN STORY DENIED,—A Rome message says the official spokesman described the Abyssinian claim to a victory in Tembien as false and absurd. He says it is another example of the campaign of lies against Italy.
THE SANCTIONS QUESTION.— “Europe is sliding down the incline of sanctions at the bottom of which is war,” declares “II Popolo d’ltalia,” in a sensational article attributed to Signor Mussolini, appealing to students throughout Europe to exercise pressure to avoid a new European conflagration. “There are those who think a war against Italy will be an easy one. They are mistaken. Italy has been prepared for a long time to meet such an eventuality. The youth of Europe, in order to prevent this monstrosity, must unite in a spiritual unity above all politicians.”
DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCES.—It is understood that valuable results
emerged from Mr Eden’s talks with M. Lozoraitis, Lithuanian Foreign Minister, regarding Memel, which is one of the danger spots of Europe, owing to Germany’s attitude.
