The Australian swimming championships were begun yesterday in perfect weather in the hew 55 yards long Oympic Pool, which is described as the best in the Southern Hemisphere. It cost £30,000. More than 3500 spectators were present. Following are the principal results:

100 Yards Championship.—Sakagami (Japan), 1; W. Kendall (New South Wales), 2; W. Fleming (Queensland), 3; A. Crawford and G. Vockler (Victoria) , dead heat, 4. Time—ss l-ss.

200 Yards Breaststroke. Championship.—W. Weir (Victoria), 1; E. Hobbs (Western Australia), 2; R. Houston (Victoria), 3; Kwong Chun Hang (China) 4.. Won by inches. Tim&—3m 7 2-ss.

400 Yards Invitation Handicap.— Jean Taris (France), 1; S. Herford (New South Wales), 2; T. Sampson (Melbourne), 3. Time —5m 10 l-ss. The field in the 100 yards event was the best ever seen in Melbourne. In addition to the place-getters it comprised B. Hodgson, •R. Clark (New South Wales), Nankivell (Western Australia), and Smitheram (South Australia). Sakagami drew No. 1 lane next to the wall. From a perfect start Kendall went ahead in front of Sakagami,' who caught him before the turn. In the kick-off Kendall had a slight disadvantage, but Sakagami won in a brilliant finish. Fleming was a touch behind Kendall, who holds the resident title.

Sakagami’s time was l-5s outside Vockler’s record, but the present records, which were made in shorter pools in more turns, are not likely to be beaten for some time. Other events were the interstate and junior handicaps. More Australian championships will be swum on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. TRIANGULAR TENNIS, MENZEL SPRINGS SURPRISE. CRAWFORD DEFEATED.

(Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 20. The international triangular tennis tournament was continued yesterday in perfect weather. Surprises were Crawford’s defeat by Menzel and the youthful Bromwich’s convincing victory over Maier and Kirby. The latter was handicapped by an injured finger. Results were: Singles.—Bromwich beat Maier, 6—2, 7—5; Bromwich beat Kirby, 6—o, 6—2; McGrath beat Stefani, 4—6, 6—3, 7—5; Menzel beat Crawford, B—6, o—6, B—6. PREMIERSHIP CYCLING. RALSTON PREVAILS. WINNER OF GRAND PRIX. (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 20. A New Zealand cyclist, * Ralston, riding brilliantly near the finish, won the Mordialloc Cycling Grand Prix yesterday. The prize was £B7 .10/. Thirty-six of the best Australian and New Zealand cyclists entered. The distance was 50 kilometres. Ralston opened with a hectic dash and led for 200 yards. He was overtaken several times, but in an amazing finish won by more than 200 yards. Details of the points scored by the three first men are:—Ralston 46, Moore (Tasmania) 30, Moritz (South Australia) 30. Time —Ih 11m 355. With Amott (Victoria), Ralston also won the team contest with 66 points. Ralston won 5 of 22 sprints and was placed in two others. Hill (New Zealand) won two sprints and was placed in four others.
