BULLET IN CHEST

BOY’S FORTITUDE. WALKS NEARLY A MILE. SYDNEY, January 15. Leslie Diebert, aged 11 years, showed wonderful endurance and courage in walking nearly a mile over hills and through paddocks before collapsing within sight of his aunt’s home, after a bullet had passed through his chest. Leslie and his brother, Leonard, who reside with their parents at Wagga, were staying with their uncle, Mr Sydney Oakman, on his property Rockdale, about three miles from Kyeamba.

They went to play in a paddock, taking with them a repeating rifle. Suddenly, from some cause yet unknown, the rifle exploded, and the bullet went through Leslie’s left upper arm into his chest, and out through the thick portion of his. back. He staggered, then pulled himself together with the wound bleeding freely, and started to walk to the homestead.

Although suffering intense pain, the boy walked the best part of a mile, and then collapsed within a hundred yards of the house. Leonard ran and fetched Mrs Oakman, who tended her injured nephew. She telephoned the ambulance which took the boy to Wagga Hospital. It was reported that his condition was satisfactory.

BOXING. DISORDER IN RING. ONLOOKERS HURL BOTTLES. (Received 9 a.m.) BRISBANE, January 20. In a boxing bout at the Brisbane Stadium last evening, Wilson (10.5) obtained the decision over Blay (9.13). f (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 20. In the New South Wales athletic championships yesterday, the hop, step and jump event was won by J. P. Metcalfe, 50ft 3|in, which is an Australian and State record. The 220 yards race was won by T. XHampson in 22 3-10 s, the half-mile by C. Hall in 2m 2 2-ss, the quartermile hurdles by S. Stenner in 57 l-10s, and the pole vault by W. Cartwright with 12ft 3$ in.

CENTENARY CROQUET. EXHIBITION GAMES. (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 20. The Centenary croquet tourney was begun yesterday with an exhibition game between Colonel Du Pre (England) and H. P. Stratton (New Zealand), C. J. Miller and J. C. Windsor (Australia), There are 44 entrants for the singles championship, which virtually is the world’s championship, and 19 for the pairs.
