TOLL OF EXTREME COLD
INDIAN VISITATION HUNDREDS DIE IN SIND MANY FUME-POISONED VICTIMS. CROPS CUT DOWN. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright, l CALCUTTA, January 19. An unprecedented cold wave in India has caused damage to crops estimated at nearly £2,000,000 in a large area in the north-eastern regions. In the Sind alone, hundreds of people have perished, including many of the poor, who shut themselves in huts with coal braziers and were poisoned by the fumes. In Allahabad, ten thousand Hindus who are performing a pilgrimage to the sacred river Ganges are undergoing a trying ordeal. They are sleeping in the open, with the temperature degrees below freezing point, and bathing in the ice cold water each morning as part of their penance.

It is claimed to be the coldest within living memory. In several places in the interior of British Columbia the temperatures are from 50 to 60 degrees below zero.
