AMUSEMENTS

PLAZA THEATRE An excellent supporting programme is provided at the Plaza. ' Theatre, where “Men in White” opened a season last, night. Cinesound and Hearst news reels open the entertainment and are followed by “Nip Ups,” with a running commentary by Pete Smith. Then comes a really bright comedy; “Duke for a Day,” arid a technicolour film, “Gaol Days.” It is a fine prelude to “Men in White,” the dramatic background to which is a modern hospital, vivid and gripping is the gamut of unveiled emotions which only a hospital knows. Clark Gable gives a remarkable performance as Dr. Ferguson, who realises all the obligations of his profession, but struggles against the conflicting claims of the girl he loves. Myrna Loy, who. plays that part, soon comes to the realisation that’-a doctor so engrossed in his career has no time for love, with the result that the young doctor is thrown into compromising circumstances with one of the nurses in his hospital. The ensuing entanglement and its complications bring about a highly dramatic finale* Clark Gable surpasses any characterisation he has previously given. Jean Hersholt, as Dr. Hochberg, plans a noble career for the young man, and Myrna Loy competes with him in outlining the young doctor’s future. But her plans are less noble. Myrna Loy makes her part outstanding with her cool, self-possessed dignity. Elizabeth Allan appears as the intelligent, knowing little nurse, who took love when she wanted it, regardless, and paid unflinchingly. It is a splendid entertainment from start to finish.
