HAWKE’S BAY GO DOWN. WANGANUI FOUR UP. (Per Press Association.— Copyright.) : , WANGANUI, This Day. Wanganui defeated Hawke’s Bay yesterday by 21 points to 17 in a bright display of Rugby. Up to halftime it appeared as if the visitors yrould definitely outclass the home side, but nobody was prepared for the change that came over the Wanganui forwards in the second spell. The improvement gained them applause and the zeal of the forwards inspired the team as a whole, and victory by perhaps a greater margin was really deserved. « Hawke’s Bay fielded a team that was said to be as good as the province has produced for five years. In the forwards Henderson was probably the outstanding man, with Steer, the All Black, as good as ever. Ireland also played well. The best of the backs was Williams, ■ . This player, will be prominent in New Zealand Rugby this year. Grant, the centre, also played well, but -the greatest honours on the day were earned by the "full-back, Yarton.

•All the Wanganui forwards played ■well, the outstanding members of the pack being Mclntyre, Fowler, Waters and Lockett. Morgan was the best back on the field. Brogden came into his own in the second spell, and Bul-lock-Douglas scored two tries. Chase made a good impression. Tries for,Hawke’s Bay were scored by Grant, Ireland and 'Smith. Grant and Bradley * each converted a try. Varton drop-kicked a goal for Wanganui arid Lockett, Bullock-Douglas (2) and Brogden scored tries. Morgan converted three and kicked a penalty goal.

Under perfect weather conditions, Taranaki defeated Waikato yesterday by 19 points to IS, The game was bright and open, the backs of both sides combining well, Waikato held a slight superiority in tlie forwards. Although Taranaki scored two tries more than Waikato a draw would better indicate the merits of the teams. The half-time score was: Taranaki 10, Waikato 8, Waikato’s score comprised a try by Aitken, which was converted by W. iCameron, who also kicked a penalty goal. From a ragged opening,with weak tackling and little combination, Taranaki allowed the visitors to open the scoring following good work by Jackson. Taranaki staved off repeated attacks, mainly by the good defence and line finding of the All Black full-back, Collins. The winner’s first score emanated from a midfield line out. The ball travelled through the inside backs, Rutherford transferring to S. Fookesi Collins equalised the scores. Waikato then took the lead with a penalty goal. Taranaki developed better combination, holding the half time advantage by a try by Sullivan, Collins converted.

With a favourable slight -wind. Taranaki forced the pace on resumption, Edwards scoring after all the backs had handled. In a fast and open Rugby game yesterday, King Country defeated the Tokorau Maori team by 21 points to 3. The King Country backs wore superior and the forwards had the upper hand in the loose. For the winners tries were scored by Trust, Galbraith, Gilbert, and Clemett. McLeod converted one, Lawler kicked a penalty goal and Gilbert drop-kicked a goal. For Tokerau, White kicked a penalty goal.

SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN. MARGIN OF THIRTEEN POINTS. (Per Press Association.— Copyright.) TIMARU, This Day. En route to Christchurch to play Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, the Southland representatives broke their journey at Tirnaru and yesterday defeated South Canterbury by -4 points to 11. The big Southland forwards shone at short, passing, while the tackling of the side was a, feature. Southland saw more of the ball in the line-outs and scrums, and many strong loose rushes were very difficult to stop.

The visiting back line was without four players who are expected to participate in the Shield match, and was not so impressive ns was expected. Tries were scored for the visitors by Bruce (2), Frnmptou, Mitchell, Purdue, and Sot hern, Porter converting two and Sharp one. Adkins scored three tries for South Canterbury, Duke converting one’.
