TROUBLE IN YUGOSLAVIA
CROAT LEADER IMPRISONED
VIOLENT REACTION FEARED.
(Received 1 p.m.) BELGRADE, April 30. There is consternation in Yugoslavia owing to the heavy sentence of three years imposed on Dr. Matehck, leader of (1,000,000 Croats, on a charge of conspiring for the partition of the Yugoslav kingdom. Opposition circles arc afraid that the Croats will now abandon peaceful eiforts to improve the situation in favour of violence. Dr. Matchek was charged with signing a manifesto known as “Zagreb Resolutions, advocating an independent Croatia outside of Yugoslavia, also with giving interviews to British and other newspapers expressing the same views. The accuracy of these was denied, and Dr. "Matchek also" denies that he wants to leave Yugoslavia. Ho says ho only wants liberty within its borders, and a revision of the constitution.
