COSTER BALL

FOR WHANG ARE! CHARITY,

EFFORT BY LADIES. The Mayoress last evening presided over a largely attended meeting of members' of the Whangarei Ladies’ Auxiliary Relief Committee, held in the Mayor’s room. Messrs H. C. Hemphill, H. G. Carrnth .and J. H. Brown, of the Citizens’ Relief Committee, and Mr K. G. M. Kelly, representing the Rotary Club, were also present.

Arrangements were made to hold a costermongers’ ball in the Town Hall on the evening of Wednesday, May 31, to raise additional funds to assist the needy. Several committees were set up to forward the organisation. The object in view, together with the novelty of the entertainment, undoubtedly will create considerable public interest, and, from the enthusiasm displayed at the initial meeting, success is assured. “The Psychological [Moment.”

The ladies evidently are believers in striking while the iron is hot, and an emissary was sent in to the adjoining room where the council was sitting, asking for free use of the Town Hall, It was proposed that the request be complied with. A councillor raised the question as to the cost of moving the seats, lighting and cleaning, estimated to amount to £3.

The "Mayor: “I still think we should give the hall free, which would represent the borough contribution to the cause.” Cr. R. B, Finch: “Neither you nor I, Your Worship, would dare to oppose it. The ladies have chosen the psychological moment." (Laughter.) His Worship: “They made a good point, I thought.” The motion that the hall be granted free was carried unanimously, and the suppliants, waiting eagerly for the tidings, received the announcement enthusiastically.
