RETENTION OF MALTA
LORD FISHER’S INFLUENCE
(Received 10 a.m.) MALTA, October 27,
Condemning the Nelsonian school of thought in England which advocates the abandonment of Malta and the blockading of the Mediterranean by means of bases at the entrances, Lord Strickland told the Senate that- Lord Fisher’s intervention prevented the abandonment of the island. , If the British had left Malta it would-have been occupied by France under.. a threat of war. The possibility of war in the near future was indicated, by the flow of capital into, the British banks and the masses of bullion in the Bank of Prance. 1
