BANK ROBBERS SENTENCED. The theft of £SOOO in notes from the Australian Bank of Commence in December, 1029, had a sequel at the Sydney Quarter Sessions yesterday, when Arnold Walker, aged 42, was sentenced to imprisonment for five years. William Evans, aged 40, was sentenced to imprisonment for four years, and Joseph Wall, aged 58, for two years. The Judge expressed the opinion that the bank staff had displayed negligence. RUGBY TEAM RETURNING. The majority of the New Zealand University Rugby team were passengers on Thursday for Wellington. Four of them-left by the Marama for Auckland yesterday. LOTTERIES AND “SWEEPS.” Speaking in the British House of Commons, the Home Secretary, M-t .1. R. dynes, stated that the Government had given careful consideration to suggestions that an inquiry should be held into the lottery and sweepstake laws, but it was not satisfied on its present information that the balance of opinion in Parliament or the country was in favour of a revision of the existing laws. NAVAL CRUISE. The battleship Queen Elizabeth and part of the Third Cruiser Squadron will visit Yugoslav waters in July and August. The visiting vessels will include three cruisers, nine destroyers and four other craft. EXODUS DUE TO DROUGHT. Driven away by drought from their farms, where they have not had a crop since 1928, farmers are starting to trek to the North from Southern Saskatchewan. They have abandoned their lands and debts, and are driving their livestock with them and camping along the route. SPANISH ARMY DECIMATED. The Army Gazette announces that the Spanish Army, as a result of reductions under the new regime, now has a total of 4673 officers and 10,447 men, compared with 19,827 officers and 384,212 men under the monarchy.
