The winter meeting of the Waikato Racing Club opened at Te Rapa today in doubtful weather. There is only a fair attendance, and the course is very heavy. Results:

Fairfield Handicap, of 75 so vs; six furlongs.—(9) Union, 9.1, I; (3) Snowlap, 9.2, 2; (1) Wee Prince, 9.10, 3. llluminelli was scratched. Won by a length and a half; the favourite two lengths further away. Time —1.20 1-5.

Maiden Steeplechase, of 100 sovs; two miles and a half—(6) Domestic Trouble, 9.0, I; (3) Snow Prince, 9.3, 2; (7) Eanson, 9,5, 3. All started. Won by four lengths; the third horse a furlong further away. Time —-5.47.

Winter Handicap, of 175 sovs; one mile and a quarter. —(2) Little Doubt, 9.0, 1; (I) Standfast, 9.8, 2; (3) Lucky Alice, 9.2, 3. Mervette, Trishna and To Hoia were scratched. Won by two lengths and a half; Lucky Alice three lengths further away. Time — 2,17.

Open Hurdles, of 150 sovs; one mile and three-quarters. —(4) Monetize 9.2, 1; (2) Antrim Boy 11.3, 2; (1) Lucess, 10.11, 3. Cruachan was scratched. Won by a neck, the favourite four lengths further away. Time—3.2B 2-5.

Waikato Steeples, of 200 sovs; three miles— (1) Star Comet, 10.5, I; (3) iCopoy, 9.12, 2; (5) Matu, 9.10, 3. All started. Won by four lengths; seven lengths between second and third horses. Time. —6.23.

Flying Handicap, of 125 -sows; six furlongs. —(1) King Ford, 9.6, 1; (3) Ruffles, 10.0, 2; (6) King Field, 9.3, 3. Lucky Alice, Talisman and Cool Mint were scratched. Won by four lengths; Kingfield a neck further away. Time — 1.20 3-5. A Handy Present. Union, the winner of the Fairfield Handicap, was making his initial appearance when he won the event. He has been attached to G. J. Spinks’ stable at Paeroa about 12 months, and was owned by Mr P. Brenan, of that town-, who presented the horse to his present owner, Mrs M. Shaw, three weeks ago. Lucky Number. i _____ Number 7 is always considered lucky, and those holding tickets on No. 7 in the first three races at Waikato today ' collected three very nice dividends. ASHBURTON TROTS. A bad smash in front of the stand just after the start, occurred when Red Clover fell and brought down Gunfire, War Bird, Logan Fraser, Jester and Aimworthy. Symmetry’s gear was damaged and the horse was pulled up. Two drivers were injured, but were not sent to hospital, Longbeach Handicap, of 125 sovs; one mile and a half. —(1) Edith’s Voyage, 60yds, 1; .(6) Fairyland, 12 yds, 2; (11) Lucky Voyage, 12yds, 2. All started. Won by a head; half a length between second and third horses. Time—3.32 4-5.

Ashburton County Handicap, of 300 sovs; two miles.—(l) Satin King, scr, 1; (9) Sunny Bob, scr, 2; (2) Rollo, 24yds, 3. Milo Minto, scr. Won by a length;, three-quarters of a length between second and third horse. Time —4.25. Great Logan was coupled with the winner. X.Z. SAPLING STAKES. Of 850 sovs. For two-year-olds; one mile and a half. (7) SILVER DE ORO 1 (1) TEMPEST 2 (C) MYRA CHENAULT 3 Tenor was scratched Won by a length and a half; two lengths between second and third. Time. —3.25 4-5. Siro was coupled with the second horse. Acton Handicap, of 125 sovs; one mile and a half.-—Lily Harold, scr, 1; Netta Oro, 12yds, 2. All started, Netta Oro was coupled with Maurice Billon.
