ONERAHI NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Personal, Among holiday visitors to the township, down for Easter, are Mr and Mrs .T. A. Inkster, -who, with their family, arc enjoying the hospitality of Onerahi House and putting in a good time amid seaside joys, Mr and Mrs W. J. Orr and family arrived on Thursday, also on holiday bent, and are temporarily camping, for the recess in their suburban villa in Mackenzie Avenue. The Dutchman’s Pipe. Considerable notice of the above rarity, in the way of flowering .creepers lias appeared in the Press, and, at the risk of appearing tedious, it may be of interest to state that it has been well-known arid cultivated among Onerahi horticulturists for some time. Mrs O’Neill, now of Maromaku, grew it for years-, and Mrs M. J. Munro has a specimen today, growing and flowering in her Onerahi garden. Those Goal Posts. Members of the Onerahi football fraternity are considerably exercised in mind over the accusation of vandalism in respect of the kauri rikas lately erected as goal posts on. the domain football ground. The rikas were not cut purposely, but formed part of a bush-area, already felled and. awaiting burning on Mr FitzGibbou’s Waikaraka property. Thus the accusation does not lie. There was little of the vandal in utilising the young trees as goal posts, rather than * to leave them to go up in smoke when the bum was fired. School Cricket. There was elation arid excitement on Thursday among the Onerahi boys, on the occasion of the match between the Hora Hora School eleven and the One- | rahi School Cricket Club. Parents and visiting spectators were on the ground in fair force. Hora Hora won the toss, and went first to the wicket's, being all disposed of for 10 runs. The visitors placed ri plucky game, but an evident want >of practice put them practically nowhere before the excellent batting and fielding of the local lads, victory going to the Onerahi boys with a declared score of Hora Hora 10, Onerahi 80 for 5 wickets. Following are the scores of the Onerahi ' players: G. Mason 6, B. Whimp 13, N. McLeod 8, C; JoassS 27; J. Mason 28 not out. Heavy dale. Throughout Good Friday the wind came away from the nor’-west in a heavy blow that rioted over the plateau in fine stylo. Buckets and household utensils not firmly anchored slipped their moorings and went away On the wings of the gale, while hustled pedestrians at exposed .corners, had much ado to keep their feet. A warm wind arid a sky heavy with fain, but not a drop all day! It was at night that the gale increased to almost, hurricane force, and the rain began to fall. Some of the gusts were terrifying ill intensity. Houses were shaken to their foundations, and even brick chimneys swayed perilously. Leaves, twigs and branches, flying be- • fOrc the gale, rattled on the walls like small shot, hri’d, with the roar of the wind, made it a night one was glad to see the last of. The wind had dropped by the morning, but rain continued to fall till noon on Saturday. Farmers arid gardeners rejoiced at the soaking of the soil, but holiday-makers, with plans and fixtures upset by the weather told a different tale. Easter Monday. Clouds, mist and threatening rain early in the day militated somewhat against the full quota of visitors to our seaside suburb. Still as the rail! held off the buses running hourly over the road, brduglit contingents, arid the foreshore was soon populous with merry picknickers. The smoke of the billy fires rose under the puriris, cloths wore spread grid, with clatter of, crockery, al fresco dinners were soon in full swing. Bursts of hot sunshine now and again, and a warm wind, tempted adults and youngsters, and the beaches were quickly alive with bathers splashing and laughing in the shore ripples. Afloat, launches were out betimes, .speeding down harbour with happy excursionists bound for favourite rendezvous, bunting flying and music going. The rain hold off, and all who had elected to chance the elements had a very jolly holiday.
