SEMI-FINAL STAGES. AN UNEXPECTED RESULT, Two hundred games wore played in the North Auckland tennis tournament yesterday, and by evening the ground lost on Saturday had been largely recovered. Most of the competitions had reached the semi-final stages and, as is usually the case, several leading players remained in almost all the events, adding to the difficulties or arranging the draw. The surprise of the day was the elimination of Misses Mathoson and Stevens by Misses B. Wilson and D. Mullins in the first round of the ladies’ championship doubles. Misses Matheson and Stevens won the first sot comfortably, but their opponents reversed the result in the next almost as decisively. The final set ran to 5 all, and then Miss Mullins, with an unplayable cross-court shot, found the corner and ended the match. Misses Wilson and Mullins also won their second-round game after losing the first set, and will meet Misses Eecles and Ramsey, the Auckland pair, in the finals. MeDougall, Guy and Gray were all defeated by younger players in the fourth round of the men’s championship singles. Robertson (Tiinaru) and C. Deaker (Dunedin) have reached the final, the former defeating Eoddy: 6—o, 6 —4, and the latter defeating Pollock: 6 —3, 7 —5.

The-semi-final-stage has been reached in the men’s doubles, the remaining pairs being Boddy and Cox, the Otago champion, and Robertson and Sumpter. The ladies’ championship singles was won by Mrs W.
