ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS
STOCKING WITH FISH.
ROTORUA REFUSES SUPPLY.
At the meeting of the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society's Council on Tuesday night, advice from the Curator of Fisheries, Rotorua, that it would not he possible to deliver the 50,000 fry ordered by the society, was received with regret.
The society has previously been supplied with fry from Rotorua, and the reason given for refusal was that a man could not be spared to accompany the fish on such a long journey.
The council decided to write to the Curator of Fisheries expressing disappointment at his action, and pointing out the loss sustained by the society as the result of not getting the fish.
lii refusing the request to supply, from Rotorua, the curator advised the Whangarei Society to establish its own hatchery and /rear the trout from ova, which ho considered would he cheaper and more satisfactory . than importation. It was decided to approach Mr Holman, Whau Valley, to ascertain whether he would he prepared to again undertake the rearing of fish. TROUT DISEASES, There was considerable discussion upon a letter from the Hew Zealand Association of Acclimatisation Societies, requesting payment of a percentage of the society’s revenue towards the expense of investigating trout diseases and foods.
The council did; not consider the Whangarei Society was justly entitled to use any of its revenue towards the purpose, as at present more was being spent on fish than was received for fishing licenses, and almost the whole of tho revenue was devoted to maintaining the game supply.
HAWKS’ LEGS. It was announced that the result of the hawks’ legs competition would not he made known until next meeting.
