SUNDAY BOWLS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —As many auembers of the bowling clubs of Whaugarei are able to play only on their weekly half-holiday, it seeihs a great pity that the greens are not available to them on Sundays, Several clubs in New Zealand allow this already, and, as time goes on, many more will certainly do so, as the old narrow view of Sunday observance is rapidly changing. Tenuis and golt are played fairly extensively on Sundays, as most of us know, to the great physical and moral advantage of the participants, and the same beneficial results apply to bowling. Especially are these games of inestimable service to those whose careers are of a sedentary nature, and a quiet game of harmless bowling on a Sunday gives the participants renewed vigour for the duties of the week. No one needs to be employed to prepare the greens on Sundays, as the little rolling required can bo done by the players. As to the argument that such play would 7 cause offence to some people, I would point out that bowlers of golfers or tennis players .do not dictate to those objectors to games as to the manner in which they shall spend their Sunday* and they have a right :o expect the same freedom of choice, provided they keep within the law. If a churchgoer is a bowler, the fact of his play ing on Sunday need not interfere with his worship, and if he is not a churchgoer he certainly will not be a lees good man because he plays on Sundays, bemuse a healthy innocent game tends to beget men sana in corpora sano. I am, etc., “HEALTH.”
