ELSIE WALKER CASE
REOPENING OP INQUEST,
MAY BE DIFFICULT \MATTEB.
LEGISLATION PROBABLY NECESSARY.
(Special to Northern Advocate. J ’) AUCKLA.ND, This Day. '
Although Mr F, K. Hunt, S.M., the Coroner in the Elsie Walker case, has suggested to the Crown Prosecutor either that the inquest be reopened or a prosecution be instituted for perjury, there appears considerable doubt as to whether any jiower exists to reopen’ the inquest. 1
An eminent legal authority here today stated that the English law confers power on the High Court'of Justice, if application is made to the AttbrheyGoneral, to order a second inquest, but New Zealand legislation, referring to coroners, confers no such powers on the Dominion Supreme Court. It is at least arguable whether, under any circumstances, an inquest could be renewed or reopened. The case apipeared to be one in which the Government ought to take action and legislation might be necessary. /
