FEARSOME FLOODS
TOWNSPEOPLE MAROONED FOUR THOUSAND FACE DEATH. MASSED ON HOUSETOPS (Australian Press Association.) (Received 11.7 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 15. News from Troy, Alabama, states that 4000 persona, constituting the entire population of Elba, 32 miles south of Troy, are marooned and facing possible death, awaiting rescue from the rapidly rising waters. A telephone linesman who worked his way to within half a mile of Elba reported that all the smaller homes were under water, which had reached the roofs of the taller buildings, which were black with people.
He could hear the screams of women and children as the waves came over the roofs. People clung to housetops and the upper branches of tall trees, or floated on pieces 'of wreckage, awaiting the aid of live planes , of the National Guard. Numerous motor and rowboats arc endeavouring to reach them.
BIG HOTEL COLLAPSES, (Australian Press Association.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 13. A hotel at Elba is reported to have collapsed under the pressure of water, while 100 refugees were inside.
