NEW ENGLAND FLOODS

CRITICAL STAGE PASSED,

AFTERMATH DIFFICULTIES,

NEW YORK, November 8

With further danger from the New England floods definitely past, the work of relief and rehabilitation is progressing rapidly'. Soldiers and Red Cross volunteers are caring for refugees in temporary barracks. The situation generally has greatly improved, notwithstanding snow and intensely cold weather in some sections. Sufficient food and medical supplies have reached centres where the suffering is most severe, and the danger of disease has been greatly' lessened.

It is impossible at present to compile a complete list of the dead, but 85 bodies have been identified, the majority of whom were residents of Vermont.

An enormous acreage of land is under water, rendering many homes still inaccessible to rescuers with supplies; but the problem , is now largely one of administration and re-establish-ing lines of communication.
