A charge of driving a . motor car at 3.30 a.m. in Bank' Street without any lights and with only one number plate was preferred against Carl T. Easmussen at the Whangarei Magistrate's Court, before Mr E. W. Tate, j S.M., this morning. Senior-Sergeant j O'Grady said that' defendant had a reasonable excuse, as he was driving an' urgent case to a doctor. Mr Trimmer, who appeared for defendant, confirmed the statement and added that defendant, who had not used the •car for some time previously, had Keen unable to affix the lights and number plates before using the car. He had endeavoured to telephone for a taxi, but owing to the floods all the telephones in the neighbourhood were out of order, and there was no option but to drive his own car. The police have in hand invesli ttion of a burglary which took place at the week-end at Mr C. Hewson's grocery store in Maunu Road. Mangapai beat Y.M.C.A. by three goals to one, and in the ladies' division, at Mangapai, Ramblers beat Mangapai by two goals, scored by Misses Bartlett and Hill, to nil.

A little while ago experts on boring for oil visited Motu in the Gisborne district and returned to Australia to report to their principals. Mr. A. Carter, of Whangarei, wrote to them suggesting that they should also inspect the areas at Hikurangi and Kioreroa, where there arc good indications of oil, and he has received a reply from Australia stating that the experts wll return to New Zealand to act upon his suggestion. Soloists, chorus and orchestra arc all working hard for the success of the oratorio "Elijah," which is to be given at the Whangarei Town Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. A particularly gratifying feature of the production should be the fact that the Waiata Society has only had to obtain one soloist from outside its own Otherwise the oratorio will be entirely

the work of Whangarei people—a praiseworthy local effort, entitled to a maximum of local support. The meeting to discuss the question of a local effort in behalf of the movement to erect a national memorial to the late Right Hon. W. F. Masscy will be held at the Town Hall supper room at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The meeting is called by the Mayor of Whangarei and the Whangarei County Chairman, and it is hoped that town, and country will be well represented, as it is desirable that any organisation which is set up should cover the whole district.
