CHINESE DISTRESS.
RELIEF SUPPLIES TAX-FREE. PHENOMENAL FLOOD LEVEL. HANKOW IMPERILLED. (Received 9 a.jn.) PEKIN, July 30. The Cabinet approved a proposal to exempt from taxation for a period of four months all articles of clothing, foodstuffs * and shelter materials intended for relief of the flood sufferers.
The level of the river at Hankow has reached 48 feet, the highest point for 35 years. Continuous pumping of the drains has kept the Concession, from flooding, but with a: further rise this will not be preventable.—Reuter.
