MAORI LANDS

THE COMMUNAL DIFFICULTY,

WELLINGTON, This Day.

Mr V. H. Reed (Bay of Islands) told the House yesterday that he thought that Maori land titles should be individualised quickly and the Maoris then placed in the same position as Europeans. This would solve much of the Native lands problem and bring vast fertile areas into profitable occupation, while at the sarnie time removing the old grievance of the failure of Maori lands to pay their share of local rating.

Mr W. D. Lysnar (Gisbornc) joined Mr Reed in urging that Natives should be given full control of their land and be required to make it productive.

Dr. Pornarc countered with a suggestion that if production per acre were the test of right to hold land the Pakeha ought to make way for Chinese
