RUAKAKA CHAMPIONS
FINALS YESTERDAY
Yesterday marked practically the close ol the hockey season unless an j Auckland team visits the district, j and the results of the games played j gave Ruakaka the double championship for the year, in men's and ladies' competitions. OLD GIRLS DEi'EAT RUAKAKA High School wld Girls played a atienuous v-a-side with Ruakaka and alter playing on into the fourth tenminuie spell before a decision could b e arrived at, Miss 0. Pickmere shot a goai ior Old Girls, and won for her side a fast and keenly contested game. Ruakaka had several oppor tunities of scoring, but were unable to avail themselves of them, the | shooting being wild. Mr G. Larking ! refereea. the match. RUAKAKA v KIA TOA The final in the ladies' championship was played between Ruakaka and Kia Toa, and was won by the former with very little to spare in advantage of play, by the barest , majority, 3 goals to 2.
In the first half, Miss M. McKinnon shot a goal from the right wing for Kia Toa, and Miss N. Sloane evened the scor e before half time. After the intervaF Miss Sloan e put Ruakaka in the lead, but Miss McKinnon retaliated shortly afterwards and the game was again anybody's until about's minutes before time, when Miss N. Sloane secured her third goal, which won the match and the honours for the year. The contest, which was controlled by Messrs Thomas and Hodgson, was a good one throughout, although Ruakaka missed several rare chances, and Miss Sloane did not hit Wltn her customary unerring precision. HUIA JUST BEATEN Huia Club put a splendid team into the field against Ruakaka in the final of the men's competition, and the result was the best gam e played in Whangarei this season, Ruakaka getting home by 3 goals to 2. By the, end of the first quarter Paterson had secured on e for Huia and F. Murdoch one for Ruakaka. Clayton then scored for the country team with a nice flying hit in the circle and Paterson evened matters by notching a goal for Huia in the third quarter. In the last spell, with barely 3 minutes to go, B. Sloane shot the third goal for Ruakaka.
From start to finish the match was most strenuously contested, and although opportunities of scoring were lost by both sides, it was a fine exhibition with which to wind up a highly successful season. Huia in particular had improved its play very much, and the Club's players put up a great fight against the recognised ability of the Ruakaka representatives. Both; teams played without goal-keepers, and the new formation was more useful to Huia than to Ruakaka.
The referees were Messrs J. H. Hodgson, G. Larking, and A. Thomas a trio to whose efforts much of the success of hockey in the district this year has been due.
