SEA INUNDATION
ALARM AT HOKITIKA
RESIDENCES ABANDONED
GREYMOUTH, This Day,
News has been received from Hokitika that the sea inundated the the northern end of the town last night.
There was a heavy nor'-wester all day and as the tide reached the full about 7 o'clock that which is described as a veritable tidal wave came up. past the houses on the beach side of Revell Street. The water reached to the Catholic Church, in the third block back from the waterfront.
The people were much alarmed and had to, abandon their houses on the west'side of Revell Street, in which piles of timber and driftwood have been deposited.
The sea came up rights-of-way and rose as high as the window-sills. All th e outhouses on the beach were demolished.
There were several other waves up to 7.30 p.m., and after each thee sea receded foi; a long distance. — Press Assn.
