The United Press Headquarters' cor. ' respondent says: "The British advanced south-west of Lens during a terri- { fie thunderstorm, just before dark on Thursday, their progress averaging five hundred yards along a two-mile front. They are still advancing, being half-way through Avion and also well ahead south-eastward of Lens. The Germans have not counter-attacked. All our gains are consolidated." ' A correspondent who watched battle from an elevation behind the Canadians says: "Black stormclouds came up, with vivid lightning, and thunderclaps indistinguishable from the howitzers' detonation. The infantry stormed the outskirts of Lens and the plains southward to the accompaniment of both Heaven's Sir Douglas Ha'ig's artilleries. Aeroplanes defied the elements, literally played with the storm, and again swept the Germans from skyward."
