A wireless, German official message says: "There were stubborn fights yesterday between La Bassee Canal and the Scarpe salient, westward and south-west of Lens, which we relinquished long ago as a fighting zone. The enemy launched an attack on the Arras road, but it failed. In the evening several divisions attacked betwe. n Hulluch and Mericourt, and between Fresnoy and Gayrelle. We repelled the enemy near Hulluch and between Loos and Lens-Lievien road. There were vigorous engagements westward of Lens, where a d\ sh enemy attack was made to develop. A reinforced attack near Avion failed Tlv English, after bitter hand-to.hand fighting, occupied our foremost lines between Opp y and Gavrelle windmill, but test sanguinarily. We stormed the French position on a front of one thousand eastward of Cernay and held it against--j'igorous counter attacks. We attackecT • the western slope of Height 304, capturing ? position astride the Malancourtt Esnea road, on a front of two fctousand metr,:s to .a depth of five hundred Wires. We stormed the positions irJ Avocourt Wood, on a front of three hundred metres." cc
