We have managed to struggle through the winter as well or better than we could have reasonably hope ed for owing to the shortness of feed and low condition of' stock at the commencement it is to be most devoutly hoped that the coming summer may be a little more damp than last, but whatever the early portion may be, most undoubtedly it will be as dry or worse after the new year— that, is if past experience goes for anything »v
The blockade kept up in Whangarei] to pilfcve'nt natives from infected districts entering, does not appear to be very difficult to break through as I know of some blockade-runners who have succeeded in gaining the haven they had made up their minds to get to. The wee hours of the morning are chosen and have proved so far favourable.
Ir seems almost absurd that there should have been any .question about the metal required for the road near the Wairua Bridge. Supposing the cost of the Puma stone was double that of the Ruatangata stone, the former would he cheap in comparison for no better can be found in the North Island than that of little Mt Eden.
Plum and peach trees are very promising at present, but as the equinoctial sales are yot to arrive it will not b(j( advisable to run too deeply into debt on the strength of present promise.
One or two of the settlers are sentK ing in cream by the wagon, but the majority of us will be a week or two before we start and probably it may be our last season, if the bi-carbon-ato of soda maniacs carry out their fell designs against, the back-block settlers.
