ORDINARY MEETING.

A DIRTY SHED.

The North New Zealand Coal and. Cement Company, Ltd., repesented by Mr J. Harrison, called the Board's attention to the disgraceful condition of the Board's shed at the Town Wharf, in that tar and dirt were smeared on the floor. Reference was also made to the fact that goods were left there indefinitely by oersons to the inconvenience of those who used the place for legitimate purposes. A couple of trucks were applied for. The chairman moved that the wharffinger be instructed to remedy the cause of the complaint, and that the chairman and Mr Reyburn be a committee to consider the procuration of trucks. —Carried. CHEAP GAS.

A welcome letter was received from the Acetone and Illuminating Company, of Napier, to the effect that the <;ost of the gas supplied by them had been reduced from 4d to 3d per cubic loot. AN IMPRACTICABLE SUGGESTION. Mr R. Harrison, writing to the Board, suggested that it would be a good thing, in view of the increasing popularity of Grahamtown as a pleasure ' resort, to take steps to improve the beach of that locality. He thought it would! bes practical and inexpensive undertaking if the Board would clear away the boulders for a few chains length and deposit a quantity of sand instead. ' The Board did not see eye to eye with Mr Harrison, Mr Morey considering that if any quantity of sand was placed" on the foreshore mentioned!, in three months' time there would be as little as there was at present, so strong was the current which swept past the locality. x Here Mr Baiti spoke of the road which had been formed along the fore- * shore by erecting a Wall of rocks, and which, in a large part, had been broken down by the force of the sea. The speaker thought that the wall should be pitched and concreted. Mr Harrison's letter was received. THE DREDGE. The dredgemaster's report, as previously published, was received. Considerable discussion ensued 3ipon the question of depositing the sludge from the dredge. Mr Morey argued that it was futile to place the material on. the banks, whence, he said, it would surely be washed back again to the channel. Mr McLeod recommended placing a lew loads on the portion of beach at the end.of the.Town Wharf. The chairman urged that no good purpose would be served until a breastwork had been built. ADDENDA. The sum of £167 7s 9d, the total of the certified! accounts, was passed for payment.

- Mr Reyburn moved that 50 per cent, of the cost of the barges, two of which are built, be forwarded to Mr W. E. Tattley on account, the balance to be paid upon the completion and delivery of the punts.—Carried. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. It was recommended by the committee appointed to inquire into the alleged obstruction caused by the boathouse recently owned by Mr R. Frodsham, that the complaint laid by Mr Reyburn was fully justified and that .the owner, Mr Pickmere, be instructed to remove the building its own length to one side or the ether. _ This course was adopted. In addition it -was decided to have the mangroves in the near vicinity of the bridge lopped level with the height of the road. In reference to Hoey'ss complaint re barges damaging the bridge crossing the Waiarohia near their property, it -was found that the bridge had been .erected at the complainants' own responsibility, therefore it rested with them (Hoey Bros.) to remedy the trouble by moving the piles from the middle of the stream. Mr A. Wilkinson's request, p.r a permit to build a boatshed and to obtain gravel was granted, on the committee delegated to look into the matter certifying to the reasonableness of request. Reverting to the question of impounding logs, {he chairman said that £11 15s hart bc-en paid out, while only £2 I.os had Ijieen recovered by the Board from owners. This was most )unsatisfactoryi continued the chairman, as a rm.mPconld come to the office and demand iljio fee (ss) without any-! one knowina■/•where he had secured the timber. « There were nearly 40 logs, for whV-r, impounding fees had been paid: !)?.- the Hoard, but no one knew where, the lo".s were. The chairman that in future the logs be placed in 'tie boom through the bridge oppo;-. it<- tb< limber mill, and that Mr Driver c» ; rif / to the legality of the impounders' ciaim for a fee. — Carried. Tim works committee recommended that j. ..,•:: be made regarding the cost of concrete pile:; and slabs for the formation of the proposed breastwork Jjetween Tip' 1 town wharf and the fishermen's jetty. The clerk was instructed to correspond with Mr Moore, of 'Auckland, with regard to the matter.
