The late spell of diy weather has been of great benefit to our roads, but they are not yet to be negotiated by strangers unless they are web-foote-l.
A meeting of the settlers was held in the public hall on the 10th inst. to discuss ways and means of linking up settlers' homes with wire entanglements for the telephone. No doubt the idea is an excellent one, the only question that militates against everyone joining is the annual cost per subscriber. To put it tersely, each subscriber will have to pay the equivalent of two hundred ordinary telegrams. I doubt if that number is sent from this office in any single quarter of the year. It is possible to pay too dearly for a toy.
A want which should be laid before the postal authorities and which, if supplied, would be of more use to the public than the private telephones, has never yet been mooted at any meeting held by the settlers for the advancement of the district. I refer to the need of raising the grade of the office so that post office orders and postal notes may be procured, and I can see no reason why we should not have a savings bank here, so that we can h<culcate habits of thrift in our children when we, in a fit of good humor, pay them something on account for promises made.
On the 16th inst. a social was held in the hall. Although there was not a very large gathering it was very enjoyable, and it is to be hoped that they will be held more frequently and with something like regularity so that outsiders may be induced to visit us.
