Activities of Manawatu Heritage Movement

Following the decision of the annual meeting of the Manawatu Heritage Movement to make provision for life membership on the payment of the sum of £3O, it was reported at the monthly meeting of the executive committee that many members were taking advantage of the new rule. The chairman (Mr. W. B. Tennent) presided and extended a welcome to two new members of the committee, Messrs E. D. Fuller and P. B. Davidson. It was decided to open an account at the Post Office for the deposit of life subscriptions and any other sums which the committee may decide upon from time to time. It was stressed by the members that the time to build up the funds was now, as the calls on the resources of the branch would undoubtedly increase as the children became older and the branch must be in a position to fulfil its obligations to the children of the servicemen who had given their lives for their country. The members of the committee felt that there were many not yet members who only required asking,-and it was resolved that members be requested to bring before organisations and meetings with which they are associated the objects of the movement in an endeavuor to further the membership of the branch. Reports were submitted by the visiting committees on visits made during the month and correspondence was received from several widows conveying thanks for birthday gifts forwarded for the children. The following new members were elected: Mrs. M. Hansel, Messrs R. F. Goodman, A. J. Gillies, A. W. Hudson, W. H. McPhail and L. I. Plimmer. It was decided to allocate the cases on the register among the members of the executive committee for periodical visiting and distribution of Christmas and birthday gifts. It was felt that such action would enable the branch to maintain better contact with the children and mothers and so be in a better position to render that service of guidance, advice and aid for which the movement was founded.
