Changes in Command of U.S. Armed Forces
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21.
President Truman announced that General Marshall is retiring immediately and that General Eisenhower is succeeding him as Chief cf Staff. Admiral Nimitz is replacing Admiral King as Chief of Naval Operations shortly after Christmas. General Joseph McNamey, former Deputy Chief of Staff, is to succeed General Eisenhower as commander of the United States forces in Europe and American representative on the Allied Control Commission Admiral Raymond Spruance is rep).-ing Admiral Nimitz.
Mr. Truman said General Marshall and Admiral Nimitz long ago expressed a desire to retire after the defeat of Japan. General Arnold also desired retirement soon.
