Women’s Institutes

Owing to sickness the October meeting was cancelled and competitions previously arranged for that month were carried on to the November programme. Mrs. Hcayns presided over a good attendance. Being International Day the usual collection was taken from members. Parcels and gifts of cash were also brought for the lepers. Mr. Mason is to be thanked for a donation of 10s towards this fund. Correspond- * ence included a letter encouraging the formation of a junior circle. A meeting will be held at a suitable date when it is hoped the younger ladies of the district will come forward and take an interest in this scheme. A letter was also received from a past member, Mrs. Baillie, thanking members for friendship and kindnesses extended her while in the district. The president then presented Mrs. Gale with a pretty shoulder spray and asked her to display the Challenge Cloth, which was won by Mangamutu for'the “best report” delivered by Mrs. Gale at the half-yearly council meeting held at Woodville recently. A report of the council meeting was then read by Mrs. Thomson. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mesdames Lowry 1, Warnock 2; sponge roll, Mrs. Heayns 1; patchwork article, Mesdames Warnock and Morris 1 equal; mystery parcel, Mrs. Warnock. Afternoon tea was dispensed by tile hostesses, Mesdames Stokes and Morris. Members were asked to note that tho December meeting will be held on tne first Wednesday in the month. Competitions will be: Six heaviest hen eggs; egg-cup of flowers, arranged; roll-call, Christmas cheer for hospital. A play reading will be presented by the Drama Circle.

kairanga Mrs. F. Hockly presided over tne November meeting. Mrs. H. Turner read the motto for the month and birtndav sprays were presented to Mesdames Voss and Cohr. It was decided not to put an entry in tho Feilding Show. Correspondence was read from Airs. Kilgour and Miss J. Kilgour tendering their resignations and thanking members for their parting gifts and floral sprays. Letters of thanks wore received from the Polish Children’s Com* mittee for clothing received and the Leper Trust Board for Christmas Gitt parcel. It was decided to give the usual donation to the local school calt club competitions. Mrs. Prouse reported that the institute had sent 295 parcels to local boys during the war, each one costing in the vicinity of 15s. The sum of £213 13s 2d had been raised for the purchase of goods. Surplus funds left over had been handed to the wel-come-home committee. Mrs. Prousc was accorded a hearty vote of thanks as was also Airs. L. Clark for her report on the recent council meeting. Approval was given of the proposed suggestion to call for donations from institutes to send a delegate home to England for the A.C.W.W. conference next year. Aliss M. Grant gave an interesting talk on the A.C.W.W. conference she attended in Washington before the war, and

the experiences and benefits gained therefrom. After offering thanks on behalf of those present, Airs. Hockly presented the speaker with a shoulder spray. Competitions resulted: Poppy, Mrs. G. Davey I, Airs. Eglinton 2, Airs. McClelland 3; cluster, Airs. Matheson 1, Airs. Parsons 2, Aliss Alildon 3; flag, Airs. Prouse 1. Hostesses were Alesdames H. Turner, T. Pedersen and Saunders. The programme for the December meeting which is to be put forward one week owing to the welcomehome to local boys being the first week, and will be held the second Tuesday is as follows: Hand-made handkerchief, rose, and cluster, and small flower show, classes to be (1) 1 rose; (2) 2 roses; (3) 3 roses; (4) antirrhinums, collection of 6; (5) sweet peas; (6) stocks, 3 blooms; (7) delphinium, 1 spike; (8) carnations, 3; (9) cinerarias, 3 heads; (10) geranium, 1 head; (11) 3 pansies; (12) vase of any other variety; trophy for most points in show, which must be staged by 1.30 p.m.
