Manawatu County Council

The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Cllr. R. Craig (chairman) presiding. There were also present Cllrs. W. E. Barber, B. S. Lawrence, B. R. Henderson, N. Remnant, E. N. Rowe and C. S. Hunt. The following correspondence was dealt with: —

From the Palmerston North Hospital Board advising as to the loan proposals for the Feilding maternity hospital to cost £45,000 and additions to the Otaki Sanitorium to cost £21,000. —Received. From the Foxton Borough Council asking for a contribution towards the cost of piping 700 ft. of drain through the borough. It was pointed out that the drain dealt with surface water from the county carried by the Awahou drain.—lt was agreed to refer the matter to the works committee for investigation and report. From the Feilding Agricultural High School advising as to the development of the school. —Received. From the Mt. Biggs School Committee requesting a load of metal for the children's horse paddock—Granted. From the Rongotea Co-op. Dairy Co. drawing* attention to the menace to its properly of an old disused building which had been put up for auction for removal and which had not been removed. The risk of lire was stressed and the Council resolved to represent the position to the owner as well as to the Public Health Department. From Mrs. K. E. Campbell, Ranfurly Avenue, Feilding, requesting permission to grazo part of the road adjacent her property for an hour a day.—Referred to the Council’s inspector to investigate.

From Mr. W. T. Caithness, Oroua Downs, requesting permission to erect a fence along the road fronting his property to enclose an area of six chains by 8 yards.—Resolved to advise that permission could not be granted. Tho County Engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported generally on the work of maintenance and said that for three days during October the Foxton-Shan-non Road was flooded to a maximum depth of 2ft. Gins but traffic was only hold up for a few hours. A large quantity of debris came down the Manawatu River and caught up on the Shannon bridge piers necessitating attention. A culvert was washed out on the Tangimoana highway and this had been repaired and lengthened. Substantial maintenance works had been commenced on the Feilding-Awahuri highway. The metal crushing plant put out 3017 cubic yards during October. The treasurer's statement reported as follows:—County fund a/e., debit £2481 6s 2d. reserve a/c., credit £20,000; loan a/c., credit £240 19s Id. Receipts since the last meeting totalled £1504 4s 4d. including £368 7s on account of rates.

The Trajmvay manager reported for the month of October as follows:—The earnings amounted to £279 Is 7d and the running expenses £31(5 Is 7d, leaving a debit balance of £37. The chief items of traffic were, metal 1015 cubic yards, manure 243 tons, and coal 70 tons.
