Notes of the Day

At Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) roferred to the bereavement suffered by the Town Clerk (Mr. C. 11. Tate) in the death of his mother. The sympathy of the council was extended to Mr. Tate.

Citizens of Feilding are reminded that Armistice Day is to be commem-

orated tomorrow when the 27th anniversary falls. The usual observation of 2 minutes silence will take place at 11 a.m., and the fire-bell will be sounded to notify the hour.

That trading banks, now that the war was over, should revert to normal trading hours, was the view expressed by Cllr. H. J. Dewe at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council. The council agreed to represent the position to the proprietors.

It was reported at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council that a meeting of the local milk committee had been held recently when questions concerning consumers and vendors were discussed. It was agreed to call an early meeting of all vendors to further consider problems which the milk committee feel can be satisfactorily solved in harmony.

The naming of the thoroughfare giving access to State houses in Lytton Street extension was considered at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council when the Mayor suggested that in accordance with the practice of the council to name all new streets after past Mayors, the particular thoroughfare be named after Mr Ernest Fair who had occupied the chair for some years.

The illness of Mr. A. B. Shannon, chairman of the Groua County Council, was referred to by the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council when he regretted that Mr. Shannon was still rather seriously ill. The happy relations between the borough and the county were largely due to Mr. Shannon and all, he was sure, would wish for his speedy restoration to health. A motion of sympathy with Mrs. Shannon and hopes for an early recovery was carried. Tomorrow is to be observed by the parishioners of St. John’s in the Feilding district as their annual “Day of Giving. ’ ’ This means of supporting the Church has been for some years now in use in the parish; it takes the place of the old bazaar. Parishioners are asked to make their contributions tomorrow in the form of “notes,” eagh “note” to be in proportion to the means of the giver.. The country churches will join in this effort. The preacher in St. John’s Church at Evensong will be the Rev. H. W. Monaghan, M.A., vicar of All Saints’ Parish, Palmerston North.

A good idea of the work being done by the members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Feilding and surrounding districts, can be obtained when one realises that during the month of October the ambulance travelled a distance of 921 miles thus bringing the total mileage of service now rendered to just on the 3,000 mile mark. This service maintained twenty-four hours a day by a small band of volunteers is a meritorious performance. It is to be hoped that the canvass for annual subscriptions to'help the work will receive the support it deserves.

Formal notice of the loan proposal for the maternity' hospital at Feilding was received at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council from the Palmerston North Hospital Board. The notice set out the estimated cost of the structure and pointed out that the work was one of extreme urgency. The letter also referred to the proposed loan for extensions to the Otaki Sanatorium setting out that these had been rendered most necessary. Receiving the letter the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) said that all contributing local bodies were notified of the loan proposals which if approved by the Loans Board would automatically go ahead.

Considerable time was devoted at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough .Council to the report of the works committee on the influence of the Oroua River on flooding at Simon Street and Campbell Street. Cllr. H. J. Dewe reported at some length on this matter, stating that the Council had been in touch with the engineer of the Alanawatu Catchment Board on the subject which was of direct concern to certain property owners. A recent inspection of the locality had disclosed that the position had definitely deteriorated. The question was one for the property owners concerned although the wider issue of river control was one of direct interest to the Catchment Board. It was agreed that arrangements should be made for an early meeting of interested property owners to discuss suggestions for a course of action calculated to remedy the threat of erosion.

The old wooden building immediately adjacent the site of the Post Ofiice in Feilding is at present undergoing renovation. It was pointed out at Thursday’s meeting of the Borough Council that permission to proceed with the work was given on the understanding that it was of a temporary nature only and that within three years the structure would be replaced. ,Councilllors expressed themselves as being opposed to alterations and patching up of old wooden buildings in the business area. It was recalled that permits for temporary structures in the brick area had been granted during the war period because of the shortage of materials and it was hoped that such would be reviewed as conditions became more normal. It is likely that the building in the Square referred to will have the upper storey removed. The owners of the structure intend later to replace the building with two new shops as soon as a favourable opportunity occurs.
