Auckland’s Brief Premature Celebration

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 13. The premature announcement that Japan liad accepted the Allies’ final terms caused much excitement and some short-lived celebration in the city. Many Aucklanders took the first statement with reserve because of its origin from Ottawa instead of Washington, but their pent-up jubilation was too much for some young people and groups of them roamed Queen Street waving flags and blowing whistles. A number of firms dressed their facades with flags of the Allies and several stores sold dozens of small Union Jacks and within an hour or so from some upper storey windows brief clouds of tom paper fluttered down into the streets. However, the celebrations ended almost as quickly as they began and Aucklanders in general settled down again to wait for the official announcement.
