Timaru Stages Impromptu Mafeking Day
(Per Press Association.) TIMARU, Aug. 13.
A spontaneous celebration of VJ Day took place in Tiinaru this afternoon on receipt of the message purporting to convey Japan’s acceptance of the surrender terms. Sirens shrieked, bells pealed and in a few minutes shops and offices were emptied and the town gave itself up to gaiety. Brass, pipe and tincan bands headed processions of young and old swinging rattles, singing and scattering confetti. A true Mafeking spirit prevailed and continued tonight. The only persons inconvenienced -were the bakers who had prepared dough for two days’ supply of bread and it will have to be bought tomorrow for the bakers are taking a holiday on Wednesday.
