Victory Holiday
The additional holiday for victory in Europe passed very quietly in Palmerston North yesterday. There were no organised functions and only shops purveying essential commodities opened in the morning. The change in the weather brought about by a cold easterly wind, contrasted markedly with Wednesday’s sunshine which graced the thanksgiving!* services and procession. It was originally intended that the Ohakea Air Force Band, with a number of airmen, should take part in 'the victory parade but plans wero changed and a ceremony was held on the station at Ohakea. There was a full parade under Group-Captain R. G. Cohen, A.F.C., who read the news of the capitulation of Germany and then a message from the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Vice-Marshal Isitt). Prayers were recited and a march past took place with Group-Captain Cohen taking the salute. Incipient Fire The Palmerston North Fire Brigade received a call at 6.30 o’clock last evening to a resident at the corner of Grey and Albert Streets where a sack in front of a fireplace became ignited.
