Well Done Manawatu
The list published a few days ago showing the deficiencies as at August 20 of various areas within the Wellington district in the raising of Patriotic Funds came as rather a shock. Overall, only 70 per cent, of the funds required had been raised. The quota for the deficient districts, due to be raised by September 30, is £205,000 and to the date given not more than £142,000 of this had come to hand. The honorary treasurer to the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council stated: “The only zone which has exceeded its quota is Palmerston North (including Kairanga County), which, with a quota of £16,433 has raised £18,449, an excess of £2016.” The quota for Wellington city is £IOO,OOO of which barely £56,000 has been raised and the treasurer estimated that the city would be short by about £30,000 at the end of the financial year. But it is not only the Capital City which is behind. Wairarapa, Wanganui and many smaller towns have like deficiencies. Palmerston North and its adjoining county have every reason to be very proud of the way the commitment has been met and exceeded. This is a tribute to the generosity of citizens and also to the splendid organisation responsible for raising a sum £2OOO in excess of the quota.
