Apiti
(From our Own Correspondent.) The 50th anniversary of the opening of the Apiti School is to be celebrated on Sunday afternoon next with a combined churches’ service at the schoolgrounds. All interested are invited to be present. Mrs. Duncan, senr., has gone to visit her daughters in Gisborne and WhataMi's. C. Bain and her son, of Ormondville, are staying with Mrs. W. McKay. Mr. and Mrs. C. Watkins and their son are Dunedin visitors, staying with Mr. and Mrs. G. Watkins. Wireless-Mechanic Owen Watkins spent a short leave with his parents. Lieut. J. R. Osborne, Mrs. Osborne and their small son are on holiday at Dargaville. Apiti school pupils have been busy collecting books and magazines for men of the seiwices. The head teacher, Mr. K. R. Lambie, reports that 800 books and magazines have been collected for this purpose and that the majority of the books ai*e of the type needed to provide entertaining reading for the members of the Forces. Mrs. G. Watkins pi'esided at a well-at-tended meeting of the Apiti bianch of the W.D.F.U., when votes of sympathy were passed to Mrs. C. Spence and the Digby family. Mrs. James Martin, who has returned to Apiti to live, was again welcomed to membership, as was Mrs. Davis, a new member. A further donation of 6s is to be forwarded for the Leper fund. Mrs. Duncan Simpson, of Marton, was the guest of honour, who gave a talk of her expei'iences in Great Britain and Canada, prior to and since the outbreak of the present war. Mrs. W. H. Watson was thanked for making a thrift quilt for tho Lady Galway Guild and also for donating three tins of herbs for the use of men overseas. Mrs. Simpson judged the competitions as follows:—Best bloom: Mrs. Mclntyre (rose) 1, Mrs. J. R. Stewart (peony) 2, Mrs. J. Pettigrew (azalea) 3; decorative vase of flowers: Mrs. Mclntyre 1, Mrs. Massey 2, Mrs. Kilgour 3. Next month’s competitions will be for best bloom, best collection of six flowers, plate of sandwiches—four varieties, and patchwork apron. Mi's. J. Cawood and Mrs. H. Schmidt are to be hostesses. The High School girls had a bx'ing and buy stall to aid school funds. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames W. Hogan. T. Nix, L. Miller, Mclntyre and Miss Nix. The dance to aid Patriotic funds and to entertain several local young men home on furlough, was arranged at short notice by a committee of local young people, and proved a very successful and jolly function on Wednesday night. Mr. E. Clifton was the M.C., and the music w'as supplied by the Thompson family, of Rangiwahia, Messrs Malone, R. Muir, F. Churchei' and extras by Miss N. Churcher. Assistance was given by Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Bensemann, Mrs. Prujean and Mr. T. Nix, senr. Supper was served by Misses Betty Churcher. Beryl Simmondsen, Stella Harland, Muriel Prujean, Messrs C. Watkins, B. Bensemann and N. Prujean. The lucky Spot Waltz was won by Miss Muir and Pte. Alan Viles and the Monte Carlo by Miss Lorna Verry (Kairanga) and Mr. Tom London.
