Precautions Against Spread of Mumps

WELLINGTON, Aug.

A special bulletin issued by the Health (Department says that while there is no need for undue concern at the present outbreak of mumps, the public are advised to take all reasonable precautions to discourage its spread. The incidence of mumps appears to be greater than normal, but has by no means reached alarming proportions yet. The isolation of the patient is imperative. An attack of mumps is announced by a headache, loss of appetite, slight rise in temperature, chilliness and pains in the back and limbs. In an average case there is a swelling ol the gland below and in front of the ear, stiffness of the jaw and pain on opening the mouth. The most infectious period is when the symptoms start and the gland starts to enlarge.

The treatment is largely a matter of nursing. The mamin thing is to relieve th e patient’s distress. Bed during the acute stage is essential. A soothing lotion such as a mixture of glycerine and belladona helps to ease the pain, and a dose of ten grains of aspirin, an adult dose, brings relief. During the four or five days when the trouble is at its worst a milk and soft-food diet is advised, also the regular use of an antiseptic mouthwash. The patient should be kept out of draughts, as complications can be dangerous. The patient should avoid contact with other people for at least a week after the glands have become normal.
