APPEALS CONSIDERED BY ARMED FORCES BOARD

A number of appeals against overseas service came before a sitting of No. 3 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Palmerston North yesterday. Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., presided, associated with him being Messrs T. R. Lees and T. H. B. Ewens. Mr. C, H. Clinkard appeared for the Crown. Charles Edward Adin, of Bainosse, farm hand, was appealed for by Charles Adin, his father (Mr. G. C. Petersen), on grounds of public interest and undue hardship, while an appeal was also lodged by the reservist himself on the same grounds and also conscientious objection. in evidence the father said ho was milking 90 cows with the aid of two of his sons. A further son, William Dennis Adin, refused to work on the farm. Reservist said he didn't oelieve in war and wouldn’t take part in it. Two of his uncles had been imprisoned during the last war for their beliefs. He belonged to the Churcn of England, but his appeal was not on religious grounds. (Questioned by Mr. Clinkard, appellant said ho would not taite part in noncomibatant service and would do nothing to defend Now Zealand. Both appeals were dismissed. William Dennis Adin, of Bainesse, labourer, a brother of the previouslymentioned reservist, appealed on conscientious grounds. Ho told the board that his conscientious objection was not based on religious principles. He did not believe in slaughter. The chairman: I don t think anyone in the Court does. Further questioned, appellant said he would not do non-comoatant service. Tho appeal was dismissed. Erie Badger, of Whakarongo, farmer, appealed against the calling up of G. W. Smithers, au employee, ou grounds of puolic interest and undue hardship. Appellant, in evidence, said that, witn Smithers' help, ho milked 35 cows and looked after 150 sheep. The appeal was dismissed subject to reservist not being called up before October 31. Smithers, who had lodged a personal appeal on conscientious grounds, handed in a statement setting out his beliefs. To Mr. Clinkard he said ho objected to performing nou-comDatant service. If the enemy came here he would not fight them. He was a member of the Open Brethren. Alfred Oscar Goodrich, of Bunnythorpe, farmer, said he believed Smithers was sincere in his beliefs. Tho appeal was dismissed. Other appeals dealt with were as follow: — Drs. D. A. Gordon and J. F. Menzies, houso surgeons at Palmerston North Hospital, appeal by Hospital Board, adjourned till end of year; Dr. T. O. Giluert, assistant medical superintendent, appeal by Hospital Board, adjourned sine die. Carl Eric Larsen, of Ashhurst, farm hand, appeal by C. H. H. Larsen, father, adjourned sine die. A. K. Hayward, of Palmerston North, freezing works employee, appeal by Mrs. M. a. Rice, not to be called up before October 31.

P. M. Petersen, of Palmerston North, labourer, appeal by Mrs. a. Petersen, dismissed.

John Patrick Ryan, of Bainesse, farm hand, appeal by M. J. Ryan, father (Mr. L. Laurenson), adjourned for two months.

Douglas Alexander Mitchell Anderson, of Kairanga, farm hand, appeal by Alexander Anderson, father, dismissed, reservist not to be called up before October 31.

J. M. Leon, of Kairanga, farm hand, appeal by S. Parsons, employer, request for postponement of service till tho end of the year, reservist not to be called up before October 31. W. A. M. Mill?, of Oroua Downs, farm worker and store hand, appeal by Frederick Arthur Mills, father (Mr. Petersen), dismissed, reservist not to be called up before October 31. Robert Charles Hodgson, of Kelvin Grove, farm hand, appeal by Mrs. C. A. Crawford, aunt and guardian (Mr. Petersen), adjourned sine die. G. W. Willis, of Manakau, cheese factory worker and farm hand, appeal by W. J. Willis, father, dismissed.

James Douglas Woodley, of Aokautere, farmer, appeal by J. A. Woodley, lather (Mr. L. Laurenson), reservist transferred to Territorial Forces and to do three months' training in May, June and July next.

William Raynor Bond, of Bainesse, farm hand, appeal by Mrs. B. A. Bond, mother, and M. M. F. Luckie (Mr. Laurenson), adjourned sine die. M. R. Voss, of lvarere, farm hand, appeal by M. W. Voss, father (Mr. T. M. N. Rodgers), request for postponement of service till March 31, granted. E. F. Bourke, of Rangiwahia, farmer, appeal by J. ±’. Bourke, brother (Mr. A. M. Ongiey), reservist transferred to Territorial Forces for three months' training in May, juuo and July next.

Bernard A. O'Deu, of Palmerston North, poultry farmer, appeal by E. T. O’Dea, orother (Mr. G. E. Rowe), request for postponement of service till July next, reservist not to be called up oej.ore December 31.
