GRAFTON (AUCKLAND) BEAT MANAWATU Making a spirited stand in their second innings, Manawatu averted an ignoble defeat by Grafton (Auckland) iu their two-day cricket match at the Sportsground, which was concluded on Saturday afternoon. On the openiug day Grafton, with first use of the wicket, compiled 113 and then dismissed Manawatu for 43. At the close of the day’s play, Grafton had lost nine wickets for 137 iu their second innings. When the game was resumed ou Saturday morning, Burke aud Harrison, the not out men, carried the total to 181. With a deficit of 251, Manawatu started badly, one of the opening batsmen going without scoring. The next man did likewise, and when the third wicket fell, only 28 was on the board. Five were down for 95 and then N. Galiivlian and Allan became associated in a free-scoring partnership, which was not broken till the score had advanced to 172, of which Allan had contributed 42.
