Investor Received Too Much

PAY-OUT ERROR AT MARTON HONEST BETTOR RETURNS SURPLUS Sonsation followed sensation when Goldburn won the Raugitikei Hack Cup at Marton on Thursday. Not only, was a record “win" dividend associated with the outsider's success, but there was also, it was reported, what might have been a costly error in the pay-out on the totalisator. One of the lucky investors was a wornau who held two ten-shilling tickets on Goldburn, one ticket being on the “win" pool and the other on the “place" machine. When these tickets were presented for payment the size ot the dividend and the infectious exeitenieut of the race crowd appeared to have affected the pay-out clerk, who paid out an amount almost equal to two • * win '' tickets. The sum was something like £6O more than the correct amount, and an appeal was made over the course broadcast system lor the re turn of the surplus money. Overcome with excitement at her good fortune, the woman left the course almost immediately after coi lecting her dividends, and thus she did not hear the broadcast appeal. Inquiries on the course led to the information being conveyed to the woman, who readily volunteered the statement “hat she thought she had too much money paid to her, and on ascertaining the amount of the surplus handed it over, an action which was keenly appreciated by the totalisator officials, it is of interest to note that it had been the intention oi the womau to back the last winner, Golden Pam, but the receipt of such a largo dividend impelled her to refrain from tempting Dame Fortune too much. —Chronicle.
