Bar to D.F.C. Awarded New Zealand Airmen

DEERE’S COURAGE Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. Details from the notice regarding the award of a bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross won by Flight-Lieutenant Alan Christopher Deere, of Wanganui, hav been received by Air Hcadquarers, Wellington. Flight-Lieutenant Deere war awarded the D.F.C. in June and the bar in August, lie being the first New Zealander to achieve this distinction luring the present war. The second New Zealander to receive a bar to the D.F.C. is FlyingOfficer ferien John George Carbury, of Wellington, the award being announced a few da ye ago. The notice concerning Flight-Lieu-tenant Deere states: “Since the outbreak of the war to August, 1940, this officer has personally destroyed 11 and probably one other enemy aircraft and has assisted in the destruction of two more. In addition to the skill and gallantry he has shown in leading his squadron, Flight-Lieutenant Deere has displayed conspicuous bravery and determination in pressing home attacks against superior numbers of enemy aircraft, often pursuiug them across the Channel to shoot thorn down. “As a leader he has shown outstanding dash and determination.’
