Women's Institutes

MILSON At the May meeting there was a large attendance, Mrs. F. Murphy presiding and extending a welcome to all. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Child and James. Three new members were welcomed, Mesdames Little, Sykes and Bingham. An interesting report of the recent council meeting was read by Mrs. Drake. Mesdames Penketh and Graham gave a report of their monthly visits to sick members in the Paimerston North Hospital. Mesdames Johnston and Brookfield were appointed hospital visitors for May. The conveners of the circles gave their monthly reports. All are starting their activities once again. Mesdames vVood, Casey and Miss Terry were re-appoint-ed to a social committee and a dance will be held at an early date. These will bo continued during the winter • months. The competitions resulted:— Best mop, Mrs. Ward; spray of berries, Mr 3. Brill 1, Mrs. Anderson 2; best bloom clusters, Mrs. Cutten 1, Mrs. Graham; single bloom, Mrs. Drake I, Mrs. Casey 2, Mrs. Brown 3. Mrs. McKenzie (convener of the garden circle) decided to divide the best bloom class into two sections, clusters and single bloom, points to count the same in both classes. Tho competitions for the June meeting are: Best bloom, baby’s knitted jacket, baby’s gown, articles to be given to the women’s hospital auxiliary. A demonstration on cane work will be held, also a play reading by the drama circle. After the usual business was finished, Mrs. T. M. N. Rodgers and Miss M. Grant, who were present by invitation, discussed with members the position regarding the building of a hall by the institute on the section which was recently donated to them by Mr. Terry. After considerable discussion regarding the proposal it was decided to incorporate to secure tho necessary finance to carry on with the building of a hall ut an early date. The hostesses for tho Juno meeting are Mesdames Hansen, Holder, Hubbard, Harding, Holland, Hambling, Jennens, James, Jennings, Johnston, Jones, Judge, Jensen, Lewis and Misses Hanton and Keene. The May meeting took the form of a social afternoon and proved to be very enjoyable. Miss A. Marshall presided and Mrs Harvey acted as secretary in the absence of Miss V. Green. ed a vote of thanks. Further arrangements were made regarding the shop window to be exhibited at Palmerston North show. Mesdames J. Whitehead, J. MacFarlane, R. Hamilton and Misses Clere and V. Green were appointed to take charge of the window. Members are requested to bring any articles at all suitable for the window to the June meeting. Miss Richmond, a visitor to cur Institute then gave a very delightful talk “Iu and Around London.’’ Miss Richmond gave a vivid description of the many places of interest visited during her stay in London and members were sorry when time completed tho speaker to end her talk. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Rich mond. A competition arranged by Miss Nola Jefferies proved popular, Miss Richmond being the winner. Members had been asked to bring along articles of interest from home and other lands also antiques. Afternoon- tea was served by the hostesses Mesdames E. Dermer, R. J. MacFarlane and R. Hamilton. The winners of the various competitions were:—Cooking, three ginger-nuts, Mrs A. Groves 1, Miss Z. Jefferies 2; best bloom, Mrs J. Whitehead I, Miss Clere 2; an article lor the shop-window, Mrs E. Dermer 1, Miss Y. Green 2. The competitions for the June meeting will be a coffee sponge sandwich, best bloom and the best knitted article (excluding toys). The hostesses will be Mrs P. Green and Misses M. Guy, J. Groves and J. Rooser. Members are reminded that a committee meeting will be held at the hall Tuosday, May 30, at 2 p.m. Also a practiso of all members of the drama circle on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. SANDON The president, Mrs. W. E. Pearce, presided over a good attendance of the Sandon Women’s Institute, which was held at the residence of Mrs. A. K. Drew, “Brooklyne. ” An invitation was received from the Parewanui Institute for the members to attend tho birthday party. Two new members were proposed, these being Misses K. McKay and L. York. Congratulations were extended to Mrs. A. IC. Drew on her appointment to the new Oroua Federation. Tho president extended a welcome to Mrs. J. C. Young and Mrs. R. H. Billens, two Palmerston North guests for tho evening, and presented a sheaf of flowers to Mrs. Young and Mrs. Drew. The presentation to Mrs. Drew was made as an appreciation for the use of her home for the institute meetings. Mrs. Pearce also extended a warm welcome to Mr. Phillips, of Gisborne, who delivered a most interesting travel talk, dealing with Iceland, Finland, Norway, •Sweden, Danzig, England, Scotland and the U.S.A. Mr. Phillips ’ address was listened to with a great deal of interest and at the conclusion of same he was warmly applauded. Tho competitions for the evening were judged by Mrs. J. C. Young and Mrs. R. H. Billens. The results were as follows: Ginger biscuits, Mrs. H. J. Fagan 1, Mrs. J. C. Fagan 2, Mrs. C. E. Eglinton 3; best bloom, Mrs. W. E. Pearce 1, Mrs. C. York 2, Mrs. A. O. Gulbransen 3; best vase of flowers, Mrs. W. E. Pearce I, Mrs. H. J. Fagan 2, Mrs. VV. J. Rowan 3. The competition set for the next meeting is: Best knitted tea cosy, plain scoiies, best bloom, any flower and best vase of flowers.
