Opiki Dahlia Show

From Cur Own Correspondent. The Dahlia Show, held under the auspices of the Opikl Women’s institute Garden circle on Tuesday, was an outstanding success, not only as regards the large, number of entries but also the quality of the exhibits. The judge, Mr A. J. Shailer, of Palmerston North, said that the standard of the blooms was higher than that of the previous show, and taking it on the whole, was very good. Staging was excellent, but exhibitors could pay more attention to classification. The outstanding dahlia, “Clara Carder,’’ shotvn by Airs S. Aloyes, of Linton, was 12i inches in diameter and a splendid example of a giant decorative. The champion gladioli, exhibited by Airs H. Kars, was a beautiful specimen of “Mrs A. G. Eery.’’ Air B. H Just, also a well-known horticulturalist of Palmerston North, said that Opiki could well be proud of its dahlia show, and on judging the miscellaneous classes stated that the African marigolds, zinnias, geraniums, hydrangeas, gaillardias, petunias and carnations were outstanding. The winning entry for polyanthus roses was

excellent. In the lupins, only one exhibitor showed tho famous Russell lupin. Competitors should realise that herbacious plants and climbers are not according to schedule in the class for flowering shrubs. There were 22 entries in the any other variety section. Tho champion bloom, a giant lilium, was exhibited by Airs W. Jackson.

The judge of the decorative section, said the results were most artistic and she was delighted with the work of the Institute members. The number of entries in the children's section was disappointing. Airs G. J. Wilde, leader of the garden circle, along with Airs B. A. Norman, president of the Women's Institute, and Mrs J. D. Aitchison, secretary, welcomed Air L. G. Lowry, AI.P., of Otakl, who offlciall) opened the show. Air Lowry, speaking also on behalf of Airs Lowry, thanked the Opiki Garden Circle for its invitation to be present. Flowers were always a tangible recognition of goodwill. Although he led a busy life he considered it a privilege to be asked to open the dahlia show, and the fine exhibition before him showed the activities on the land and he congratulated all the exhibitors on the result of their labour. Airs Lowry was presen te-i with a bouquet, the artistic work of Airs G. Larsen.
