Feilding’s Health Stamp Campaign

FOR CHILDREN’S HEALTH CAMPS The 1938 Dominion health stamp campaign commenced on October 1 and yesterday the Feilding Health Stamp Committee met with the object of furthering the sales of these stamps from which revenue is derived to enable children to be sent to the Otaki health camp. The Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) presided and there were also present Messrs A. Orr (Postmaster), F. J. Gaze, G. J. Fitzpatrick, C. M. Sargisson, T. Collins, C. 11. Tate (secretary) and Mesdames E. Scott, T. Collins, B. R. Spence and P. G. Guy. Correspondence was received from the Manawatu Distrist Committee stating that there was a credit balance in the district fund of £650. This sum was available for tho purpose of defraying the cost of sending children to the Otaki health camp and maintaining them there for a period of six weeks. Mr. Tate reported that since the scheme commenced Feilding nad sent 18 children to the Otaki eamj) and a further seven were about to be admitted. The cost to-day was £1 per week and this included the train rare. Actually Feilding had not been able to use up its quota, which amounted to 12 a year. Discussing tho sale of health stamps, the postmaster stated that the Department was out to offer every co-operation possible. Lust year the sale of health stamps in Feilding resulted in a revenue of £22 for camp purposes. This money was now used solely for the purpose of sending and maintaining the children at the camp. Sales to date had been quite good, and he anticipated that wil/i a little organisation last year’s result could be bettered. Following a discussion, it was agreed to send a circular letter to all business houses of Feilding requestiong their assistance in the direction of purchasing health stamps. The drafting of the letter was left to Messrs. Tate and Orr. The matter of making a personal canvas on business houses was mentioned, and it was agreed that if the letter did not produce results a canvas would be undertaken, the Mayor and Mr. Collins offering, along with Mr. Orr, to assist in this direction. Mr. Collins was elected to represent the Feilding district on the Manawatu District Committtee and the Mayor with Messrs. Orr and Tate, was elected the local executive. On the motion of the mayor, Supported by Mr. Gaze, the meeting carried a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Tate for his services as secretary.
