Ranfurly Shield Challenges
MANAWATU TO WAIT SEPTEMBER 24 Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. The Otago Rugby Union management committee to-night accepted challenges for the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury, on August 10 and from Hawke’s Bay on August 31, the dates originally set down for matches with these provinces. A special challenge was received from Manavvatu for a match on August 13, but it was decided to offer September 24 as a suitable date. “WOULD NOT BE SPORTING” SOUTHLAND WILL NOT CHALLENGE FOR SHIELD INVERCARGILL, Last Night. Because they believe “it would not be sporting” the members of the Southland Rugby Union decided to-night not to make the return match with Otagfl a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield unless the Otago Union issues a specific invitation.
